At Abertillery Comprehensive, we are very proud of the work that our school council does. Each form has two form representatives, that are chosen by members of the form. These representatives form the Year Group Council and representatives from each year group form the School Council.

If a pupil has an issue, contact is made initially at form level and then discussed by the pupils at year-group level.

School council members sit in at meetings of our governing body and take an active part in the selection process for new members of staff.

The School Council is made up of pupils that have been voted by their peers and I have co-opted members in the group to ensure we have a representatives from Oasis, pupils that have come from a different school, pupils that have English as a second language, gypsy travellers and the Learning Support pupils. This enables the School Council to ensure that every minority group has a representative.

The School Council will meet twice a term and will have a very important job of putting forward the ideas from their year group and will be asked to represent their school at Governors’ meetings.

Pupils are asked twice a term to discuss in their form groups ideas of what they want improved or to happen in the school and these ideas are then emailed to their Head of Year. The Head of Year then discusses these ideas with their Year Council and they are then acted upon or brought to the School Council to discuss further. Pupils have every opportunity to get their voice heard.

The School Councillors are going to have a busy year this year as they have already been asked for their ideas about how they would improve the canteen in light of the new refurbishments and are asked to represent young people in decision making such as being involved in interviews and voicing their opinions on local and Welsh initiatives.
